Day 5: GPS Field Work

Today I went out into the field to learn how to find and mark manholes using the GPS receiver. Ryan Metcalf taught me how to use the unit and then we set off for the day. We found and marked about 10 manholes in the morning. The procedure is pretty simple, find the location, find the manhole, position the unit with receiver over the manhole, create a directory, create the manhole data, and let the GPS mark the spot. After looking for a total of 15 manholes, marking the 10, and not being able to find the other 5, we headed back to JCW. Today completed my first week at JCW and I'm lovin it !

Here are some pics of me and ryan working with the GPS unit.

Day 3: New project information

After finishing up a few plans on the light table I sat down with Peggy Hiatt to learn how plans are reviewed and corrected. I will eventually be reviewing plans for various projects and using a database to mark my comments, changes, and approvals. IT was a very interesting process and I learned a lot about the plans themselves.

Day 2: Light Table and presentation prep.

Today I finished up Monday's work on the Light Table then put together a 4 page packet for an informational meeting for homeowners interested in creating a Lateral Sewer District (LSD), which basically means switching from the older septic systems to a new gravity sewer main. The packet I put together contains information about the project, its cost, and the timeframe of it. After going over the presentation I learned how the project could be approved and what would need to happen in order for it to become reality. Tomorrow I am going to learn how what I am doing with the Light Table drawings ties in with the entire system, I will also be starting another project.

Day 1: The Light Table

First day went great, I met everybody at the office and immediatly got started doing work on the Light Table. Basically what you do is lay an old plan down below, put the new one over it and the table is illuminated, then you highlight all the changes. I went through 3 sets of plans and got started on a 4th. My schedule is Mon-Fri 8am-noon. Tomorrow I will be working in the field with one of the inspectors. So far so good.
